Man in custody following standoff Local law officers responding to a recent domestic
disturbance call in northern Stone County took a man into
custody following a five-hour armed standoff. Stone County
Sheriff Richard Hill said John Curtis Mills, 31, was taken
into custody July 18 following a standoff in Crane and
lengthy negotiation by telephone. Hill said officers
responded to a domestic disturbance call about 3 p.m. July
18 at 114 James Mills Place in Crane. The first two deputies
to arrive were told by Curtis’ parents that Curtis was
inside the house with a gun and threatening suicide. The
officers were also told Curtis vowed to “shoot anyone who
came into the home,” Hill said. During the early part of the
standoff, Hill said, Curtis came out of the house and fired
one round from a shotgun “in what appeared to be in the
direction of the deputies” before going back in the house.
Stone County Special Response Team officers were soon
dispatched to the scene, along with SRT officers from Nixa
and Howell County. “We train with those other departments,”
Hill said. As soon as a negotiator arrived, Hill said,
officers established telephone contact with Curtis. To read

Financial outlook could be worse Things could be worse. In recent months, that’s been a
common theme among county officials when describing Stone
County’s revenue picture. On the one hand, Stone County –
mirroring virtually every other municipality in America –
struggles to cope in the midst of a wicked economic
downturn. On the other hand, Stone County Presiding
Commissioner Dennis Wood recently examined the county’s
financial position and declared Stone County “on firm
ground” and “probably better than almost any county in the
state....” County officials discussed sales tax receipts
during a July 8 meeting of elected officials and department
heads at the Stone County Courthouse. The most recent
figures available from state officials are termed July
receipts but in truth track Stone County sales tax
collections during May. The July general revenue figures
show an eight-percent increase from July receipts last year.
Tallies in the half-cent capital improvement sales tax fund
and the half-cent law enforcement tax fund revealed even
better results. Each of the two funds shows an increase of
almost 11 percent when compared with July receipts from a
year ago. But general revenue year-to-date receipts are off
just a shade more than three percent compared with 2009.
During the same period, receipts are down about a percent
each in the capital improvement and law enforcement funds.

Dogfighting defendants released A pair of dogfighting defendants were recently released from
custody after posting cash bonds. After being charged in
Stone County with felony dogfighting, the two men face the
possibility of up to 30 years in prison and up to $30,000 in
fines for their alleged involvement in a dogfighting
operation. Following a seven-month undercover investigation
involving local, area and state law enforcement agencies,
officers and humane society workers descended on a Lampe
residence with a search warrant July 7. Officers ultimately
arrested two men and humane society workers took custody of
a number of dogs. Humane Society of Missouri representatives
discovered six adult dogs and a number of puppies – all pit
bulls – during the July 7 raid at a Pinetree Junction
residence in Lampe. Arrested: Jon Stingley, 42, Lampe; and
Keith Owens, 41, with addresses listed in both Blue Eye and
Berryville, Ark. To read the rest of the story, pick up a
