Nixa teen found dead in Galena Local rescue workers and law officers responded to a
distress call July 26 and found a Nixa teen dead inside a
Galena residence. Nixa High School senior and football
player Austin Lee Edwards, 17, apparently died early July 26
at the Galena residence of his father and stepmother. Stone
County Sheriff Richard Hill said Edwards’ stepmother found
the teen “cold and unresponsive” when she tried to wake him
that morning. Hill said paramedics and law officers were
dispatched following a 911 emergency call at 6:22 a.m. He
said paramedics tried to resuscitate Edwards but were
unsuccessful. The sheriff said paramedics later pronounced
the teen dead at the scene following conversations with
doctors at an area hospital. Hill said rescue workers and
law officers “could see nothing physical” that might have
contributed to Edwards’ death. The sheriff said, “Based on
some interviews, we’re not ruling out the possibiity of an
overdose.” Area news reports claim there are two members of
the Nixa High School senior class named Austin Edwards. To

Consultant recommends another sewer rate hike in Kimberling City Kimberling City sewer customers could soon be looking at a
rate increase. In April, aldermen agreed to spend $4,514 to
hire Jefferson City-based Carl Brown Consulting to offer
advice on sewer rates. Almost immediately, Brown began
hinting a sewer rate hike was needed. Earlier this month,
Brown sent aldermen a preliminary rate analysis recommending
a rate hike. Brown’s analysis comes on the heels of a sewer
rate hike in October. Brown produced a lengthy sewer rate
analysis that included a recommendation aldermen up sewer
rates by Sept. 1. If aldermen adopt Brown’s suggestions, the
following changes would take place:
• The monthly base fee increased in October from $20 to $25.
Brown recommends upping the base again, this time to at
least $28.18.
• The use fee also went up in October from $3.97 to $4.47
per 1,000 gallons of treated wastewater. Brown suggests
increasing the use fee to $5.99.

Hurley man gets new murder trail date A judge recently scheduled a new trial date for a Hurley man
previously sentenced to life in prison without parole for
the 2006 murder of a Crane man. Zackary Stewart of Hurley
was 18 when David Dulin, 53, was shot to death in his home
on Nov. 29, 2006. In March, 2008, Stewart was convicted of
first degree murder at the close of a week-long trial moved
from Stone County to Greene County on a change of venue. The
murder conviction was upheld last fall in an appellate court
ruling. But in May, the Missouri Supreme Court reversed the
murder conviction and ordered a new trial for Stewart,
agreeing with Stewart’s claim that new evidence uncovered
since his conviction might sway a jury to acquit him. The
2008 proceedings were heard by Newton County Judge Timothy
W. Perigo, presiding judge in Missouri’s 40th Judicial
Circuit. The 40th Circuit covers McDonald and Newton
counties. Recently, Stewart and attorneys Stacie Bilyeu and
Grant Rahmeyer appeared before Judge Perigo. Michelle Tobin,
Stewart’s attorney during the 2008 trial, was allowed to
withdraw. Judge Perigo scheduled a bond review hearing for
8:30 a.m. Aug. 2 in Newton County. He also scheduled the
beginning of the new trial for Feb. 14 in Greene County. To
